Corrective Exercises
We teach our patients specific rehabilitative exercises to help strengthen
and correct their problem. These exercises can be performed in the comfort of
your home and can greatly improve the effectiveness of your spinal therapy.
In addition to skeletal dysfunction, muscles and connective tissues can be strained
or sprained by improper alignment, use or trauma. Corrective exercises and
stretches can help your body stay in balance and in good health. In most cases, it is important to progress significantly with correcting movement issues before returning to full training loads and velocities or job requirements. It may only take a few days to make meaningful progress.
Dr. Gregory makes use of his sports chiropractic and his strength and
conditioning training when working to enhance athletic performance as well as
during the rehab of athletic injuries. The same approach that works well for
the athletes is great for normally active patients. In most cases it is important to move beyond the lower level corrective exercises and rebuild the ability to move with force, agility and increased speed which is also important to prevent future injury.
Yoga
We can work with your yoga practice to supplement your home exercises.
Yoga is a traditional therapeutic practice that focuses on maintaining correct alignment through movements and postures. We can develop sequencing that is specific to each patient's needs, allowing patients to experience their capacity for a fuller range of stable movement. Once in a pose, alignment cues are given that teach the patient how to modify according to their body, gently correcting movement patterns and posture back to normal. This is useful in that the patient can then attend classes outside with the knowledge of how to modify if necessary and what to focus on to correct their deficits. Yoga can be used as a testing system if the person is aware and asks, "Why is this particular movement difficult? Am I too restricted by myofascial issues or is it structure or degeneration? Is it weakness or motor control? Then, Is this pose useful and challenging or is it overwhelming and in need of modification?"
This approach can be a very useful tool for self-management and maintenance.
Lifestyle Advice
Our goal is to help every patient achieve a fulfilling and happy lifestyle
full of the activities they enjoy most. We recognize that each our patient is a
whole person, and to help them reach true health and wellness is a collaborative
effort between our professionals and our patients. Advice may range from weight
management and fitness to sleep hygiene. We often find it helpful to "coach" our
patients on certain activities they should avoid or do differently to prevent
aggravating their particular health challenge.
Nutritional Counseling
We provide specific recommendations on healthy food and beverage choices as well as supplement recommendations to enhance our patient´s return to optimal health. Do you know which supplements and vitamins are good for you? It is easy to overspend or supplement ineffectively.
Dr. Gregory can provide nutritional guidance based on your individual needs.
Spinal & Functional Movement Screenings
Spinal and functional movement screenings can reveal important health information
and identify problems that need to be addressed to improve health and
well-being. We provide screenings at runs and sporting events, community events,
health fairs and places of employment. Contact us today if we can help you with
your event.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services
To complement and enhance the healing effects of Dr. Gregory's Chiropractic
adjustments, we also provide the following physical medicine and rehabilitation
services:
Neuromuscular reeducation: for balance, coordination and posture. Dr. Gregory frequently uses these techniques during rehab from lower extremity sports injuries and for prevention of future injury. There is significant overlap with plyometric exercise in these cases and there is significant support in the sports rehab literature.
Manual therapy: including deep tissue and myofascial release techniques
Therapeutic activities: This procedure involves using functional activities (e.g., bending, lifting, carrying, reaching, catching and overhead activities) to improve functional performance in a progressive manner. The activities are usually directed at a loss or restriction of mobility, strength, balance or coordination. They require the professional skills of a provider and are designed to address a specific functional need of the patient.
